A U.S. federal judge has halted a major immigration policy shift by the administration of Donald Trump, preventing the termination of legal status for more than 8,400 migrants tied to American families.

The ruling, issued by a federal judge in Boston, blocks the government from ending protections granted under family reunification parole programs—policies that allowed U.S. citizens and green card holders to sponsor relatives from abroad.

The judge determined that the administration’s plan to revoke these protections could not proceed, at least for now, effectively preserving the legal status of thousands of people while the case continues in court.

The decision impacts migrants from seven Latin American countries, including:
Cuba
Haiti
Colombia
Ecuador
El Salvador
Guatemala
Honduras

These individuals entered the U.S. legally through programs designed to keep families together while they wait for permanent visas.

The Trump administration argued that the programs were inconsistent with its stricter immigration agenda and sought to shut them down. However, the court found key issues with how the decision was made, including:
Lack of sufficient justification for ending the program
Failure to properly assess the impact on affected families

Immigrant rights groups quickly challenged the move, saying it would separate families and disrupt lives without due process.

This case is part of a broader legal battle over immigration policies under Trump’s current term, with multiple courts stepping in to review or block controversial changes.

For now, the ruling offers temporary relief to thousands of families—but the legal fight is far from over.
